Mount Tai rises in Shandong province and has been the object of worship for over two thousand years. Emperors came to offer the feng and shan sacrifices that confirmed their right to rule.

Heaven's mandate

Records tell of the sacrifices at the summit and the base performed by emperors from Qin Shi Huang on. The rites asked whether Heaven approved the ruler. Later the god of the mountain became the ruler of the dead, and a common saying has it that all souls return there.

Goddess and pilgrims

The Azure Clouds goddess, Bixia Yuanjun, is held to give children and safe childbirth, and women climb to her temple. The stairs hold more than six thousand steps and numerous carved texts. Charms and red ribbons hang on the way.

Visiting

The climb is steep and takes several hours; cable cars are available. Tourism is heavy, and the temples are active sites.
