Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote in the 1130s that Arthur was conceived at Tintagel, with the help of Merlin, who disguised Uther Pendragon as the Duke of Cornwall. The ruins on the island are mostly of the thirteenth century, with an earlier post-Roman settlement.

Legend and archaeology

Excavations found a wealthy trading site of the fifth to seventh centuries, with imported Mediterranean pottery. A stone found in 1998 with an inscription of the name Artognou prompted headlines, but it has no link to Arthur.

Merlin's Cave

A sea cave at the foot of the headland is called Merlin's Cave, and is accessible at low tide. The name dates from the Victorian era.

Visiting

A footbridge links the mainland to the island. The path is steep and in places exposed.
