Saut-d'Eau

A waterfall in central Haiti where Catholic and Vodou pilgrims gather in July to bathe, pray and honour a vision of the Virgin Mary and the spirit Ezili Danto.

Best time: Mid-July for the pilgrimage, subject to conditions.

Saut-d'Eau is a cascade in the hills. In 1847 a local woman reported seeing the Virgin Mary in a palm tree, and a pilgrimage grew. The same site is linked to the Vodou spirits Danbala and Ezili, and the waters are said to cleanse and heal.

Two traditions at once

Pilgrims bathe in the pools, light candles, leave offerings and pray. Priests from the Catholic Church have in the past tried to discourage the Vodou practice, but it continues. Observers see it as an example of how Haitians hold two religious traditions together.

Pilgrimage

The main pilgrimage is in mid-July, around the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It draws large crowds, and visitors are expected to behave as at any place of worship.

Visiting

As with all sacred sites in Haiti, outside visitors need local introduction and current security advice.

A respectful visit to Saut-d'Eau

Living communities are not a show. Ask before photographing a person or a ceremony, and follow local rules.

  1. The waterfall pools Watch rather than join a ritual bath.
  2. The chapel Visit the nearby church.
  3. The village Respect the pilgrims' space.
