Rennes-le-Chateau

A hilltop village in southern France that became a legend of hidden treasure, secret societies and a supposed bloodline of Jesus, none of which has evidence.

Best time: May to September.

In the 1880s and 1890s the priest Berenger Sauniere restored the village church and built a villa and a tower, spending more than his income. He was disciplined by the church for trading in masses. In the 1950s a local restaurateur told a story that he had found treasure, and writers expanded it.

How the legend grew

Pierre Plantard produced forged documents about a secret society, the Priory of Sion, in the 1960s. Later books, including Holy Blood, Holy Grail in 1982, and Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, took the idea up. Historians and the French authorities who checked the papers found that the Priory documents were forgeries.

Today

The village earns income from the legend, with a museum in Sauniere's domain and books for sale. The village has about a hundred residents and many visitors.

Visiting

The village sits on a hill in the Aude with views. The legend is best taken as a case study in how a modern myth is built.
