Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple
A Kerala temple of the goddess Bhadrakali, known for the Bharani festival with its oracles, red cloth and loud devotional abuse of the goddess.
Practised and told of here
Best time: March to April, for the Bharani festival; otherwise early morning on a weekday.
Kodungallur, on the Malabar coast, is an old port. Its Kurumba Bhagavathy temple is often called Kodungallamma and is one of the most visited Bhadrakali shrines in Kerala.
The Bharani festival
In March and April the oracles of the temple, called velichappadu, enter a trance, carry swords and dance on the temple roof. Large groups of devotees gather and hit the temple's beams with sticks while singing songs that are rude and intimate, which they say the goddess welcomes. Scholars see it as one of the older strata of Kerala worship, with ritual features outside Brahmin orthodoxy.
Past and present
In the past, animal sacrifice formed part of the cult; it is now restricted by law and by temple decision, and the debate over it has been long. The temple is also said to have been a place of the Kodungallur oracle tradition and of the lowest castes' participation in rites of the goddess.
Visiting
Bharani is crowded and loud, and the oracle's trance is a sacred moment, not a performance. Photograph only if the committee or people nearby say it is allowed.
