Best time: October to March.

Karnak was the greatest temple of Amun and grew over about two thousand years. Priests there washed, dressed and fed the god's statue each day, which they saw as the work that kept the order of the world.

Heka

The Egyptian word heka covers power, spell and magic. It was personified as a god. Priests were also magicians, in a sense, called lector priests, who held the books of ritual, and doctors used incantations alongside drugs. Texts on papyrus, stelae and amulets show spells for protection, childbirth and snake bite.

Execration and protection

Texts called execration lists named enemies on figures or bowls that were broken. The scarab and the Eye of Horus were worn as amulets. Later Greek magical papyri from Thebes mix Egyptian, Greek and Jewish elements, which shows how magic crossed cultures in Roman Egypt.

Visiting

Karnak is very large and hot. Arrive early, and use the sound and light show only if you want a staged evening.
