Ile-Ife

The Yoruba city said to be where the world began, and the home of the religion of the orisha and of the oracle of Ifa.

Practised and told of here

Best time: The Olojo festival in October; dry season from November to March.

Ile-Ife is the spiritual home of the Yoruba people. In the account told by Yoruba tradition, Oduduwa descended here and made the land, and the city's kings, the Ooni, are still revered.

Ifa and the orisha

Ifa is a system of divination in which a babalawo throws a chain or palm nuts and reads verses called odu. It is recognised by UNESCO as part of the intangible heritage of humanity. The orisha, the gods and deified ancestors of the Yoruba, include Obatala, Ogun and Shango. Ile-Ife has many shrines to them.

Diaspora

Santeria, Candomblé and other Afro-American religions derive from the Yoruba faith carried to Cuba and Brazil by enslaved people. Pilgrims from those places now visit Ife. Missionaries called Yoruba rites idolatry, and Christianity and Islam are now the most common religions in Nigeria, with a smaller number following Yoruba religion.

Visiting

Many shrines belong to families and priests and are not open to the public. Ask the Ooni's palace or a local guide how to attend a festival. Ife's museum holds the famous bronze and terracotta heads.

A respectful visit to Ile-Ife

Living communities are not a show. Ask before photographing a person or a ceremony, and follow local rules.

  1. The Ife Museum See the bronze and terracotta heads.
  2. Oranmiyan staff See the stone staff in the town.
  3. Ooni's palace Ask about visiting protocol.
  4. A festival of an orisha Attend only through local arrangement.
