Huancabamba and Las Huaringas

A town in northern Peru known as a place of healers, near the Huaringas lakes, where curanderos hold night-long healing rites.

Best time: May to September.

Huancabamba lies in the Andes, and the lakes called Las Huaringas, at about 3,800 metres, are sacred to the people of the region. Curanderos bring patients to the lakes for bathing and for a rite that centres on the San Pedro cactus drink.

The practice

The curanderos use a table, called a mesa, where items such as stones, swords and staffs are laid out. Healers describe the rites as a way to treat illness, bad luck and sorcery, and are also asked to lift harm. Scholars of Andean healing describe a worldview in which illness has social causes.

Sceptics and risk

San Pedro contains mescaline, and a dose in an unsupervised setting can be harmful. Medical doctors warn against treating serious illness only with such rites. Some visitors have been defrauded.

Visiting

The lakes are on community land and require a local guide. The rite is private, and this guide does not describe its steps.
