Edinburgh's Witches' Well

A small fountain at the foot of Edinburgh Castle that honours the thousands of people tried for witchcraft in Scotland.

Best time: Any time, though the Royal Mile is crowded in summer and August.

Between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries Scotland tried around four thousand people for witchcraft and executed roughly two thirds of them, a rate much higher than in England. Many were burned on the Castle Hill. The bronze fountain on the Esplanade, set up in 1912, records them.

The memorial

The fountain bears a serpent and a foxglove with an inscription that the site was used for burning accused witches. It is small and easy to miss. A later effort, the Witches of Scotland campaign, has pressed the Scottish government for a pardon and a national memorial, and a formal apology was made in 2022 by the First Minister.

Scotland's pattern

Most of those accused were women, many poor, and confessions were often taken under torture and sleep deprivation. Historians link the waves to church campaigns, local conflict and, in some places, the attitude of the courts.

Visiting

The fountain is on the Castle Esplanade near the entrance. It is a public place with many visitors.
