Dodona

A remote Greek oracle of Zeus, older than Delphi, where answers were read from a sacred oak.

Best time: May to June and September, when the valley is quiet.

Dodona lies in a mountain valley in Epirus, in north-western Greece. Zeus was worshipped there, and from the early first millennium BCE visitors came to ask practical questions about farming, journeys and marriage. The oracle lasted until Christianity displaced it.

The oracle

Ancient writers say priests and priestesses interpreted the rustling of the leaves of a sacred oak and the sound of bronze vessels. Excavators found hundreds of small lead tablets on which people had scratched their questions, which show how ordinary the concerns were: whether to move, whether a child would be healthy, whether a business would pay.

Scholarship

Dodona's tablets are some of the best direct evidence for how Greeks used divination in daily life. Scholars debate how the sound-based method worked, and the claim that it was the oldest oracle in Greece is ancient rather than proven.

Visiting

The site includes a large well-preserved theatre built in the third century BCE, the foundations of the sanctuary and a small museum in nearby Ioannina holds the lead tablets.

A respectful visit to Dodona

Living communities are not a show. Ask before photographing a person or a ceremony, and follow local rules.

  1. The theatre Sit in the stone seats and take in the valley.
  2. The sanctuary of Zeus Find the foundations where the oak is thought to have stood.
  3. Ioannina museum Look at the lead tablets with the questions people asked.
