Delphi sits on a steep slope of Mount Parnassus. The Greeks counted it as the centre of the world, and states sent envoys there before founding colonies, going to war or passing laws. The oracle was consulted from at least the eighth century BCE until the late fourth century CE, when Christian emperors closed the sanctuary.

How the oracle worked

A woman of the district, the Pythia, sat on a tripod in the temple of Apollo and gave answers that priests then put into words. Ancient writers say she was inspired by the god. Modern geologists have argued about fumes from the rock, while many classicists doubt that any gas was involved. The answers were often ambiguous, which kept the oracle's record intact whatever happened.

Influence and critics

Delphi worked as a place of diplomacy as much as of prophecy. Its priests heard from every part of the Greek world and gave the advice that shaped many decisions. The famous story of Croesus, told by Herodotus, shows the ancient view that a clever reading of an answer could ruin the person who ignored the doubt in it.

Today

The site is an archaeological park and a museum with the bronze Charioteer. Nobody consults the oracle now, though the name is used loosely for fortune-telling.
