Olkhon Island and Shaman Rock

The largest island of Lake Baikal, where Buryat people hold Cape Burkhan, called Shaman Rock, to be among the most sacred places in Asia.

Best time: June to September.

Olkhon lies close to the western shore of Lake Baikal. Buryat tradition holds that the lord of the island dwells in the rock at Cape Burkhan, and ribbons and coins mark the place.

The sacred cape

Buryat shamans make offerings of milk and tea to the spirits of the lake and the land. Women were once forbidden to go near the rock, a rule that has weakened. Poles tied with coloured cloth, called serge, stand at the headland.

Pressure on the place

Tourism on Olkhon has grown rapidly, with campsites and jeeps, and Buryat elders complain about litter, noise and non-Buryat people running ritual shows. Scholars note that Buryat shamanism was suppressed in the Soviet period and has been taken up again, with competing claims about who is a real shaman.

Visiting

Do not climb on the rock or leave rubbish. Treat ribbons and offerings as gifts to the spirits.
