Triple moon
A sign of waxing, full and waning moon, taken in Wicca as the triple goddess of maiden, mother and crone.
Also: triple goddess symbol, maiden mother crone, Hecate, moon phases symbol
The triple moon shows a full moon between a waxing and a waning crescent. It is a modern emblem, popular since the mid-twentieth century in Wicca and Neopaganism, where it stands for a triple goddess in her phases of maiden, mother and crone. The idea of one great goddess in three forms owes much to the scholar Jane Ellen Harrison and the poet Robert Graves, whose 1948 book The White Goddess shaped it, and historians do not accept that an ancient triple goddess cult existed in that form. The Greek Hecate was often shown in three forms or with three faces at crossroads. The moon itself has been tied to time, tides, fertility and women's cycles in cultures from Mesopotamia to Polynesia.
