Siddhi

In Indian traditions, a power said to come with spiritual practice, such as lightness or the ability to read minds.

An eight-pointed star: a sign of the heavens and of orientation, used in astrology, ornament and many protective designs.

Also: siddhis, vibhuti, attainments

Siddhi is Sanskrit for accomplishment. Hindu, Buddhist and Jain texts list powers that may come with yogic or tantric practice: becoming tiny, becoming weightless, seeing at a distance, knowing past lives. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali describe such powers in the chapter on vibhutis, and warn that they are distractions on the path to liberation. Teachers in many lineages tell students not to seek or display them. Popular stories about holy men often centre on siddhis, and so do accusations against fraudulent gurus, who are said to claim them for money. Scholars treat the list as religious literature, showing what each tradition considered the limit of the possible.
