Dukun

The Javanese and Indonesian traditional healer and spiritual adviser, who may also be accused of sending harm.

An open hand with an eye: the hamsa, or hand of Fatima, a protective sign in Jewish, Muslim and wider North African and Middle Eastern custom.

Also: dukun santet, dukun bayi

Dukun is the Indonesian and Javanese word for a healer who works with herbs, massage, prayer and contact with spirits. There are many types: the dukun bayi, who assists births, the dukun pijat, who massages, and the dukun supranatural, who advises on luck, love and trouble. Urban Indonesians still consult them, and many are Muslim and use Quranic verses. The word also appears in santet, a form of sorcery believed to send illness or harm from a distance, and the fear of it has caused violence: in 1998 in East Java, more than a hundred people accused of santet were killed in a wave of attacks. Fraud by a dukun is also frequently reported.
