Correspondences
The idea that planets, metals, colours, plants, days and body parts are linked in matching sets, used to plan rites.
Also: doctrine of correspondences, sympathies, as above, so below
Correspondence systems pair things so that a person can choose the right material or moment: the Sun with gold and Sunday, Mars with iron and Tuesday, and so on. In the Western tradition they were set out in texts such as Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1531 to 1533). Chinese thought links the five phases with colours, directions and organs, and Ayurveda and Islamic folk practice have their own tables. Historians note that these lists grew over centuries and that sources often disagree. Believers use them as a map for choosing what to include in a rite; others read them as a language of symbols. Modern tables are often compiled from many sources.
