Athame

The ritual knife of Wicca and ceremonial magic, used to direct and mark, and not to cut.

A key: a symbol of opening and closing, of thresholds and secrets, and the name of several grimoires.

Also: ritual knife, arthame, black-handled knife, boline

In modern Wicca and ceremonial magic, the athame is a ritual knife, often with a black handle, kept for use in the circle. It is used to trace the circle and to point, and in most traditions it does not cut physical things; a second knife, sometimes called a boline, is used for that. The name appears in some versions of the Key of Solomon and was used by Gerald Gardner's circle in the 1950s. Scholars note that its source and spelling are uncertain. In the system of the Golden Dawn a dagger stands for the element of air or fire, and Wiccans have usually linked the knife to fire and to the male principle. Some practitioners use a sword, a wand or a finger instead.
